Chief of Staff

We are seeking a Chief of Staff to work directly with our founders and leadership team on the most important initiatives across the company. If you are a sharp generalist with strong analytical skills, excellent judgment, and a bias for action - we would love to hear from you!

The Opportunity

  • High impact, ownership and responsibility from day one: you’ll operate at the center of the business, helping drive key priorities forward - whether that’s leading strategic projects, unblocking critical decisions, or enabling the leadership team to be more effective. This role is designed for someone who wants to have meaningful impact at a fast-growing company from day one.
  • Exponential growth - for us and you: Heron is at the forefront of automating workflows using the latest advances in AI and LLMs. As Chief of Staff, you’ll get exposure to every part of the business - and over time, you’ll be able to carve out your own path into leadership, operations, product, or wherever your strengths and interests lie.
  • An environment where you can do your best work: We believe the best teams are lean, collaborative, and execution-focused. At Heron, you’ll work directly with our founders and leadership across functions, solving meaningful problems in real time. There’s no middle management or red tape - just a team that cares about doing great work and helping each other do the same.

What You’ll Do

This is a highly varied role. You’ll work closely with the founders on projects that span strategic, operational, and cultural initiatives. Over time, you’ll own some of these areas yourself. Examples of what you might work on include:

  • Strategic projects - if you’ve worked in a small company before, you’ll know that opportunities come up all the time that no one has the time or headspace to tackle. You’ll bring your generalist skills and ability to get things done to these opportunities - whether they are in sales, product, customer success or internal operations.
  • People and team development - helping us scale how we hire, onboard, and support our team. This could include recruiting for critical roles, improving performance management, or evolving company rituals and culture.
  • Keeping the company running - working across finance, legal, tax, and compliance. You’ll help manage vendors, ensure filings get done, and resolve issues that keep our operations smooth and reliable.
  • Leadership enablement - helping everyone at Heron be their best by managing internal communications, preparing materials for leadership and company-wide meetings and keeping the team focused on top priorities.

What We’re Looking For

Our ideal hire will be:

  • Highly productive: You thrive on juggling multiple projects at once and driving them to completion. You’re fast, organized, and always keep the ball moving.
  • A natural problem solver: You love untangling messy issues and turning ambiguity into action. You’re intellectually curious and operationally excellent.
  • Detail-oriented: Whether it’s reviewing a contract, preparing an offer letter, or analyzing vendor invoices, you don’t let the small things slip.
  • Analytically sharp and tech-savvy: You’re comfortable in spreadsheets, dashboards, and (ideally) tools like Notion or SQL. You’re not a developer, but you’re comfortable navigating technical conversations and data.
  • Dependable and independent: You don’t need hand-holding and can be trusted to own big pieces of work end to end. You spot what needs doing and get it done.

Above all else, we value people who want to make an impact in their work. Here are some of the behaviors that we expect of all Herons:

  • Scrappy and creative: when faced with an obstacle, you will either overcome it by pure determination (i.e., by hand), or find an unconventional approach or ‘hack’ to navigate it.
  • Persistent: you may not always find the right answer or person immediately, but you're motivated to keep on trying until you do so. You’ll go the extra mile - including Flying to Gainesville - if that’s what it takes.
  • Pilot not passenger: at a fast-growing company like Heron we need people who jump on opportunities unprompted and drive them to a great outcome, rather than folks who wait to be told what to do.
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced, high-growth, team-based environment: we aim to move quickly and decisively, but together. You’ll be a great team player and do what it takes for the team to succeed.

What You Can Expect as a Heron

  • Competitive compensation, including equity
  • Based full-time, and in-person in our NYC office, with occasional travel to customers (across the country) and company retreats (often in London)
  • Your choice of top-of-the-line equipment to fit out your desk in our office
  • Competitive benefits package: health, dental, vision with partial coverage for dependents; 401K; uncapped PTO; parental leave
  • Free mental health support via Spill - on-demand access to therapy
  • Weekly company lunches (always inclusive and vegan-friendly - especially if you like Vietnamese food!)
  • Applicants from any background and gender are welcome and we have a zero tolerance policy on discrimination

Interview Process

  • 1 or 2 initial ‘get to know you’ conversations
  • Take-home challenge - a task which roughly represents the work we would expect from you
